How to measure backward:
Compare who you are today with who you were yesterday. You can look forward to where you want to go, and your future might be your target, but it is not your measuring stick. The ONLY thing you should be pouring your energy into is comparing yourself to your previous self, anything else is a comparison against an ideal. If you want to make yourself feel bad, compare yourself to others and outcomes that you wish happened. If you want to make guaranteed progress, and to feel good about yourself and your pursuits, measure backward.
